Flu season & team wellbeing

As we head back into (gulp) flu season and with Covid continuing to knock people around, I have been thinking about how different a 'sick day' looks in 2023 compared to one in 2019.

A 2019 sick day was a true 'sick' day. You could go to bed for the day or lie on the couch with a blanket and know that the day could be focused on allowing yourself to rest, heal and recover.

A sick day in 2023 feels like it has become a WFH day. This is not OK! Do we really want to live in a culture and society where we can't even take time to rest and heal when we are unwell? Is this not just going to make us even more unwell as a society and put an even bigger exclamation mark on our already problematic hustle/burn-out culture?

If an employee is sick (either emotionally or physically) and says they will work from home, we need to encourage them to take the personal leave that they are entitled to.

If we want our people and our culture to really thrive, let's all give ourselves and our team members permission to truly rest and recover when unwell.
